15: Trust

“I drove out to West Trenton today to find the apartment that Lalor put into a trust,” I said. “I think I might have seen his ex-wife there.”

He picked up his glass and took a swig. “You think?”

“I saw a woman on the patio of the apartment, smoking a cigarette. I haven’t seen a photo of the ex-wife so I had nothing to compare it to.”

“What drew you out there?” he asked.

“I did some research. The name on the trust is odd, 2-14-82. It had to mean something, and I snooped around, all legally, or at least all information I can get without breaking in anywhere.” I stopped. This was where Rochester came in, and if I’d been talking to anyone other than Rick I’d have glossed it over.

“I was baffled, trying to figure out what the combination of numbers meant. And then Rochester came over to me looking for love, and his big tail swiped a bunch of cards off the coffee table. Cards Lili had sent her parents for their anniversary.”

“And?”

“It came to me. I wondered if it was an anniversary, and when I looked up the records, I realized that that’s the day that Lalor married a woman named Genevieve Ehret.”

“That was his third wife?”

“Yup. The one who was ‘promoted’ from housekeeper, but who only lasted for a few years. I haven’t been able to get a copy of the divorce, though.”

“I can work on that.”

“Also whatever you can find on Lalor’s adopted daughter, Susan Nitz. She has zero online profile, other than a single address I really had to hunt for. I can keep digging, but…”

“But we’d both rather get the information legally,” he finished. “I’ll put both women on my list. In the meantime, I need your research skills. Tomorrow I start talking to the family members and I’d like a few pointed questions to ask.” He yawned. “And I’m too beat from canvassing all day to do much homework.”

“Yeah, I get it. Put me on the guilt train.”

The server brought our steaks, sizzling, with oversized Idaho potatoes brimming with butter, sour cream and bacon bits. I inhaled once and my taste buds went wild, even though from experience I knew the food wasn’t going to taste as good as it looked.

We ate in silence for a couple of minutes, and then I said, “If you can give me until noon, I’ll put together a brief bio for you on all the siblings and look for any red flags.”

“That’s fine. I need to write up my notes from today anyway. We have new efficiency forms we have to fill out to make sure we’re using our time effectively. I have to identify the reason behind each interview, the time it takes, and the results. Then pass all the forms to some computer wonk who comes back and says I’m taking too much time talking to grieving widows or interviewing suspects with nothing to say.”

“Not to mention the amount of time spent filling out forms.”

“Please don’t mention it.
